Summer is upon us again, and with it comes a brand new season of airing anime. There are quite a number of strong contenders for top anime this time around, ranging from sequels such as workplace sitcom WORKING!!!, the long overdue Durarara!!x2 Ten, magical girl spin-off Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya Zwei Herz!, which is now in its third summer run, to new adaptations such as ufotable’s video game adaptation of God Eater. We are even treated to totally new IPs such as master emotions manipulator Maeda Jun, who teamed up with P.A Works for Charlotte. Wherever your interests lie, there is bound to be something in it for you, so without further ado, here is our list of top summer anime to watch.
1. Aquarion Logos
Has it been 10 years already since the first Aquarion anime came out? Apparently so as this new addition to the series has been released as part of its 10th anniversary. Aquarion has has been known as the show, anime legend Kawamori Shouji does, in between his Macross works and it has taken on a rather quirky tone. That seems to have been retained though this time, there are some changes.
The setting has been changed to somewhat modern day Japan and though the mecha itself looks unchanged, the base vehicles that combine into it have undergone some drastic cosmetic changes. Also, the plot this time revolves around a world where “letters” have displaced people’s voices as means of communications, which is bolstered by its ability to spread across the world instantaneously.
Whatever the case is, Aquarion Logos is this seasons mecha anime entry and fans of the genre will want to watch this regardless. As for newbies, you may wish to try it out to experience a mecha anime that’s different than most others, as little as there are today.
Watch it if: You like unadulterated robot action with some melodrama on the side.
Imagine an alternate universe where some kids get super powers/special abilities when they hit puberty? Sounds like something out of an X-Men story right? Well that’s the premise of Charlotte. This anime centers around the special abilities that occur among a small percentage of boys and girls when they hit puberty in an alternate Japan.
Enter Yuu Otosaka, our protagonist who has such powers but uses them without others knowing and manages to live a fairly normal, average school life. That is before he meets Nao Tomori. What fate will befall the special power-users due to this fateful meeting.
With Key’s co-founder Maeda Jun at the helm, you can rest assured that Charlotte will be an emotional roller coaster ride. And if you’re worried about the animation front, that’s not going to be an issue. With P.A Works in charge of animating it, you are guaranteed a visual masterpiece to accompany Maeda’s storytelling.
Watch it if: You enjoy tear-jerkers accompanied by some of the best visuals in the business.
3. Durarara!!x2 Ten
Synopsis: With the A second season of Durarara!!, taking place a half year after the first series at Tokyo’s Ikebukuro neighborhood. If you have seen the first season, you will definitely want to see this. Its huge yet diverse cast is the main draw for the series, so you will definitely want to acquaint yourself with everyone before giving this a spin.
Watch it if: You enjoy cleverly written character banter and interaction.
4. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei Herz!
A spin-off of the much celebrated Fate/stay night franchise gets its third summer airing in a row . It reinterprets the tried and tested magical girl formula, incorporating a style that is unique to its main franchise. Combining the high speed kinetic combat of the Fate franchise and the gratuitous destruction inspired by the Nanoha franchise, Fate/kaleid liner Prisma is a must-watch for fans of the genre.
Watch it if: You like cute magical girls who know how to fight when the situation calls for it.
5. Gatchaman Crowds Insight
A direct sequel to Gatchaman Crowds, the story is set in Tachikawa City, Tokyo area. Among 180,000 of its citizens are individuals known as the Gatchaman, who fight to fend off alien criminals. For fans of the classic series, you might have been a little turned off by the more “colourful” redesigns from the first season.
It is still a reimagining of the venerated franchise though so we should expect some differences. The second season continues on the style from the first and though it might not be the Gatchaman of old, Crowds is still one for the sentai fans who enjoy the classic heroes saving the earth from alien invasion formula.
Watch it if: You enjoyed Sunday morning cartoons with monsters of the week.
6. God Eater
In the near future, unknown life forms called “Oracle cells” begin their uncontrolled consumption of all life on Earth. Standing in their way are God Eaters, elite individuals who wield living weapons. Based on the video game of the same name, the God Eater looks set to be the action anime of this season.
Granted video game adaptations are usually a hit and miss, a short look at the people behind the anime though does inspire some confidence. With ufotable on animation duties (Tales of Symphonia, Futakoi Alternative, Kara no Kyokai) you can at least expect superb visuals. Also there’s Takayuki Hirao in the directors seat which means we can expect some decent story potential. After all, he was responsible for some of the more interesting Kara no Kyokai arcs in the anime.
Watch it if: You enjoy monster slaying, but much rather have other people do it instead.
7. Senki Zesshou Symphogear GX
Alien beings known as the Noise almost rendered humanity extinct, but were stopped by individuals in armour known as Symphogear. This 3rd season of the Symphogear is pure, unadulterated entertainment at its finest. With two succesful anime before it, it takes the formula made successful by the likes of Nanoha (and it’s predecessors) to the next level, with its unrelenting action and destruction.
Hey it’s girls in armour with flashy transformations and kick ass weapons. What’s not to love?
Watch it if: You love watching cute girls beating the snot out of each other.
8. THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls 2nd Season
The second half of the anime adaptation of the popular The iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls card game and a personal favourite of yours truly. The iDOLM@STER singlehandedly made the idol anime genre what it is today, so there is much to look forward to here, if you are into song and dance performed by a huge cast of cute girls. This anime builds on the popularity of the iDOLM@STER series and just brings it further.
Watch it if: You have always wondered what the idol industry in Japan looked like.
A comedy series set in a family restaurant in Hokkaido, Japan, Working!!! is the 3rd season of an anime that his been running since 2010 . Yet again, this is one of those shows where you are better of not knowing what to expect and leaving immensely satisfied. If you have always wondered what goes behind the scenes of your local diner…then you are better off looking elsewhere, because it will never be as interesting and hilarious as Working!!! portrays it to be.
Watch it if: You enjoy workplace sitcoms such as The Office, or in this case, The Restaurant.
